Too Hot to Farm!

We have been having something of a hot snap here the last couple of weeks, with temperatures reaching into the mid 90's with the humidity trying to match it. The work doesn't stop around the farm when it is hot.

Barn thermometer.

Bella is smart enough to get out of the sun.

Unlike the crazy farmers.
Here Julia is planting another round of sweet corn.

I hooked up an automatic waterer for the piglets.

But they still enjoy taking a bath to cool off.

My new farm hat and lots of water have been a must.

The reward for all this hot work -- a fresh ham
on the BBQ with some deviled eggs and sauted spinach.

The water nipples are the greatest. I don't think I could have built a trough that our guys could not destroy in some manner. The nipples have help to keep things a bit less messy and I believe reduced the number of flies. There was no way we could have depended on my folks to keep the hogs in water while we were gone.

Only one thing that I had to change with our watering system was ensuring that the supply line was not baking in the sun. I used pvc wired to the panels after finding the water was quite hot from the hose that I had initially used.

Hope the heat drops off for ya'll soon. It's no fun when it gets that hot and sticky

peace

Don't know how we got along without the water nipples before. The pigs just love making mud holes so much that the water never stayed in the trough.

Our waterer is supplied from 50 gallon blue barrels so the hose run is rather short. The water does heat up some in the barrel but not too bad.

Luckily the heat has broken and we are back to spring weather.

Does your cow ever knock over her shelter? Our cows always try to rub on everything or lean against it.

Bella has been pretty good with her shelter. She does rub her face on the legs sometimes but has not leaned on it as of yet. I will probably end up building a permanent run in shelter for her in the corner of the pasture next to her water when I get some free time.
