Humerous Sign

Here is a favorite road sign of mine.

It is located at a merge point for an on-ramp to US 81 South. I find it funny since I always imagine that the top sign came first, then someone decided that the information was not presented plainly enough and added the lower one.

Well, what is it they say... "Everything you need to know in life you learned in kindergarten"?

I used to rationalize it by thinking they forgot the "the" in the top sign, making "alternate" ambiguous as to whether it functioned as an imperative verb or an adjective describing "right of way."

Nope, enough folks probably just didn't know what "alternate" meant.

Or they overlooked "of" and had a brain cramp trying to decide what they were doing wrong.

Can we apply this to everything? I'm so sick of gonzo drivers in my little neck of the woods.
